Personal History & Education
Mayor Salter was first elected in 1999 and has served in that office ever since. She was born in Albany, Georgia where she graduated from high school with honors. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, Magna cum Laude, from Mercer University, and two postgraduate degrees (Master and Specialist) from University of Georgia and Georgia State University respectively. More recently she has learned a lot from courses in municipal government, finance, and law offered by the Georgia Municipal Association. She has lived in Berkeley Lake since 1985, and reared her children here. John, now an attorney, and Jessalyn, now a pediatrician, both live in the Atlanta area and with their spouses have provided the mayor with five grandchildren, her greatest joy.
Experience
Prior to becoming mayor, Lois worked as a teacher of French, English, and biology and was for many years the head of the counseling department at Duluth High School. She also worked for DuPont as a Personnel Administrator and Manufacturing Shift Supervisor.
Community Service
Mayor Salter has volunteered at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and was at one time the Volunteer Coordinator for Gwinnett County’s Habitat for Humanity organization. She was president of the Berkeley Lake Chapel Association for two years and served the Berkeley Lake Homeowners Association for six years as a director, secretary, and vice-president. She is currently on the Administrative Board of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and the Board of Directors of the North Georgia Family Counseling Center. She is a member of the Atlanta Junior League, the Metropolitan Atlanta Mayors Association, and the Gwinnett Municipal Association.
Honors & Leadership
Lois was honored as School Counselor of the Year for state of Georgia; and participated in the 2002 class of Leadership Gwinnett. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and the Executive Committee of Partnership Gwinnett. She led the Gwinnett Municipal Association as its President and for several years as a member of its Executive Board. She has been appointed by two successive governors to represent all the mayors in the state on the important Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and was elected by that group to leadership positions as its Vice-Chair and Executive Board Member.
